Curating an exhibition can be the outcome of a very intellectual exercise, the result of a fortunate series of events or the weaving of an idea triggered by a work or series of works of an artist or artists. Whatever the reasons the ambition is to create an exhibition that allows the viewers to move from having an approach to the whole, grasping it somehow, which can happen experiencing how all the works are connected and work in harmony together; to the appreciation, understanding and deep dialogue with one or more pieces. A good exhibition, for me, should give you those two sides. This, the third exhibition in “Diego Correa Art Space” is the result of a beautiful fortunate series of events that allowed me to get closer to the work of these three artists and see a common element that connects them which is the use of graphic elements “line and colour” to create bold pieces that convey different states of being, a desire of making sense of something that bothers every one of them. Scott Campbell, graphic artist, uses colour for constructing what I perceive like an “emotional landscape” those strips of colour, their thickness and relation between each other have qualities that go beyond a compositional exercise, they seem to have a life of their own, pulsating and in the pulsation, they express an existential state that gives them individuality. The artist has chosen the technique of monoprint, resulting in a graphic work that is just one of its kind. Efrat Merin, painter, is using the power of the line (in its constructive ability) to show us a series of scenes that may be perceived as belonging to the area of mythology where intense emotions or aspects of what define our human condition, are represented by fantastic beings. There is a story, there is a representation but most of all there is ambiguity, a rooted aspiration of no saying “it” exactly as it is or felt but by giving clues, references and fragments to the viewer he or she can give “it” definition, essence, presence and meaning. The use of black as the main colour does not suggest to me a dark aspect in her work but an insistence in it being hermetic. Bronwen Sleigh, graphic artist, uses the line for creating images that refer to architecture. One is tempted to approach her works having the Constructivism as an historic and formal reference; however, there is something more subtle and kinder in Sleigh works as if with her constructions she is trying to understand the human in us through sections of the physical built world that we have around. The use of pastel colours makes that presentation softer, more approachable, more emotional.
